Innovative and Sustainable Design - ZHSS and IKEA Singapore

Zhonghua Secondary School approached IKEA Singapore last week to suggest a team of 3-4 designers to work on this collaborative project. In the light of this, we have proposed that teams of 3-4 designers to explore product range will be formed. The teams will meet, explore and make prototypes of product range. The team that offers the best product range will be selected for an exhibition at IKEA Singapore in June 2010

The main theme for this year's programme is 'Innovative and Sustainable Design'.

The design brief for the project is:

To design and make a domestic-based product that could be used to extend the message of saving the earth.

The design specifications are:

1.The product must be able to be placed on a dining table.
2.The product must be able to relay the message of saving the earth to the users. i.e. incorporate a sustainable element and/or bring across the importance of sustainability to the users.
3.The product must be able to be carried home easily without plastic bags e.g. ‘flat-pack’ etc.
4.The product should be aesthetically-pleasing to attract consumers to purchase it.
5.The product should be lightweight and durable to allow it to be moved easily.
6.The product should not be greater than 200 x 200 x 50 mm (tentative).
7.The product should represent a theme within the group.

I felt that it is a good chance for the whole lot of us to do a "real" design and product for the use of public. It can help to motivate and improve our ideas on them and trigger our thoughts and the process of brainstorm. It is a higher stage of difficulties and challenge that we must faced, and certainly a good experience for us in Zhonghua. I hope that there are more events like this in the future to intrigue the students to crack their heads on D&T.

It is wonderful that our school is able to work with IKEA and the group that produces the best product range is given an opportunity to be display at the exhibition by IKEA Singapore in the coming June. This will allow us to think more deeply in order to produce the best product within the limitations surrounding us. I hope that there will be more of such events coming out in the future.

This would prove to be a once in a blue moon opportunity to be given the chance to work with IKEA. Our products may also be chosen to be showcased in IKEA giving us a sense of accomplishment. It could also allow us to stretch our creative juices to the maximinum and bond with our team mates. Since it is not a chance which comes by easily, I believe we should put in our heart and soul to accomplish it. =D

  25. I am grateful that IKEA has given us this chance of producing a product that might be showcased in IKEA. For the past few lessons, we have been guided through different steps that would help us to accomplish this task and to come out with our final product. We did things such as coming out with different shapes with a few simple lines and circles and then converted those 2D drawings into 3D drawings. We were also briefed by our fellow teachers on what we had to do. A spokesperson from IKEA even came down to our school to brief us. In a nutshell, the fact that IKEA has given us this chance proves that the students of Zhonghua have what it takes to be scholars and leaders in regards of DnT and many more. Hence, I hope that all the students, including myself, will try our best to produce a product worthy enough to be showcased at IKEA. (: Jiayu 2E4

I feel that this is a rare opportunity because we do not have chances like that to be able to work with big companies like IKEA. It is also a very good chance for students who have talents in designing. Although it will be quite a process, we have teachers guiding us through our projects. From simple lines and shapes,we are able to link them together and form a unique design. Researches in products also helped us get inspirations. We design this product in order to convey the message of saving the Earth to the people. I hope that we will be able to do a good job.

This project is meaningful as we are designing products which can promote saving the Earth. It is also lucky for us that IKEA has chosen zhonghua for designing useful products their showcase/gallery.During the period of this project,we can also learn how to work with our peers to come out with great ideas.Ideas which are impossible to come up with if we are doing it alone.Teammates can also point out the flaws of our design and help us improve it into such an effective product which is able to send the message of saving the Earth and become a useful product at the same time.Projects like this can also help us to think of many ideas, which in turn can make us more creative people.

Note to Mr Suffian:Sorry for any inconvenience caused.I understand that everyone is on a tight schedule and thus,we need to all do our part in this project to ensure that it goes on smoothly. If I appeared to be disrespectful today,I am also sorry for that.I have completed all assignments including the ones due next week =) I hope that this will clear up any bad karma between us.I promise to treat D and T more importantly now. Thank you for reading.

That time, each group were ask to choose a theme for their products. But now we were asked to draw sustainability images so as to relay the message of saving the earth to the users. If the theme chosen is romantic, the products are going to be place in a high class restaurant, how is the sustainability images be able to relate to the theme? I'm confused >.<

i feel that having such a project is very useful as there will be many ideas on how to save the earth and will also educate students to treasure our resources, recycle and think green in all ways. i think that having icons on the products that are interesting are attractive are important as it should leave a deep impression in those who see it to remember and think green too. Also if its very unipue, the information about it will be passed on to othere people to know about which will further spread the message of the icon.

This project is very benificial to both other people and ourselves. I feel that we can gain valuable experience from this project, for instance, equipping ourselves with new skills. As for the environment, the final product that is created/invented, will reduce the effort required to complete a certain task, and this will in turn help the environment as well.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I feel that working with IKEA to make a product that is environmentally friendly is very good in the sense that we not only learn how to design a product, we are also helping the environment. Thus, i feel that we should all put in our effort to complete this project and to do a proper one. If our product is good then, it might actually be helping to save the earth as others will be using it.

  103. I think that sustainability is a very important factor in any product that we are doing, especially since now that Earth is facing a problem of "getting sick" and it is all because of our human activities so sustainability is sort of a must, as if a product is sustainable, it can be used for a lond period of time and that will help us to save our Earth's resources. And if a product is sustainable for quite a period of time, it will also ba more popular among people as it will help them to save money on buying a new one when it spoils and this benefits many people. So I think that doing this project on sustainability is a very good opportunity to do our part in saving the Earth and to also improve further on the product

IKEA learning journey was fun and fruitful. I worked well with my groupmates and we found out that the questions allows us to think deeper inside. Colous that are not striking for example blue, white might not be as plain as it looks, instead, it enables us to focus on the striking colour althogh it is only a small part of the room. Measurements are also very important as a little mistake might cause the product to be unable to work properly. All in all, i enjoyed the IKEA trip and it also allows me to be able to work even better with my groupmates.

I think that sustainability had a great influence in all the designs of the products. Basically, from what I learn in d&t lessons with which we are currently working with IKEA, sustainability are the factors that must be...:
1.convenience for the customers to use
2.aesthetically attractive in the designs for the customers to buy
3.must be able to support the weight and last longer
    4.saving the earth....be green
5.Is it possible to be made for a design that is safe for use...?...etc
I agree with my friend, Shu Yun, for the definition of sustainability. Our Earth ,our home,is indeed being damaged by us humans and we need to think of various ways to save it. It all lies in our hands, the earth's fate. By the way, I felt that Ikea's idea of saving the earth also saves our money...

Eh...the Ikea learning Journey is quite fun to me. I learn that for the designs to be basically good, the colours and measurements are important. All of these ensure that the designs are accurate and look pleasing in the way that we focus more on it. Like striking colours like red, orange... The measurements had to be accurate for safe use from the customers. The knowledge that I learn are very useful.I hope that next time if we are still working with Ikea, then we must go to the learning journey to learn more designs from there.+_+

I think that sustainability is vital to the Earth as less natural resources is being extracted and used, which can prevent or reduce the rate of global warming and the extinction of animals and wildlife (cutting down of trees and polluting rivers). Also, the companies and factories making products that can sustain for a long period of time indirectly benefits from it in the sense that more consumers that are environmentalists may support this idea and continue purchasing the vcompany's items, and the company may earn a good name from the decision of doing so.

I feel that the IKEA trip was very fun and exciting. Me and my group fellows had tremendous amount of fun dashing around all over the place looking for the answers to the questions in the question paper. Despite having a few difficulties in a few areas in the worksheet, the overall very eventful and I learnt that IKEA tries to design their products to make things much easier for their customers and are also environmental friendly. Even though everyone was tired, I'm looking forward to more similar excursions like that again.
I feel that drawing our own boxes for the 3D-drawings is much easier that with the boxes provided. This is because I have to measure eveything exactly parallel to the sides of the box to be able to drawing a realistic 3D-drawing. Meanwhile, the teacher forbade us to use ruler for the freehand drawing and that allows me to just estimate everything roughly and is much faster.
All in all, I feel that D&T is becoming not as stressful as it used to be as there is only drawings to be done, and hardly anymore picture board. =D

The D&T trip to ikea was a fruitful one as i had harvested alot of fresh information there. One main thing I learnt from Ikea was the different kinds of colour combination that could make the design of the room very different. For example, contrasting colours could be placed together to produce a effect. Dull/Cool colours makes the room feel more relaxing and compact, giving people the feeling of 'Home sweet home'. While bright colours make the room more spacious and gives me the enjoyable feeling. Mixing and matching different shades of colour could give many different kinds of feeling to the product, it can make it look relaxing or look fun to play with.
The second thing I learnt was about sustainability. To me, sustainability means quite alot of things. For example, I feel that sustainability is made up of the social and environment factors. We must make friends and establish harmonious relationships with other people so that everyone would be happy and the product will be sellable. The environment factor makes up a huge bulk of what i think of sustainability. The product must be durable(Thats for sure) the materials must also be eco-friendly, for example wood as it is a adundant resource and carbon emissions are lower conpared to other materials but also have similar qualities to those materials. E.g. Aluminium. By using recycled materials, we could also save the Earth too. So all in all, sustainability means durability and eco-friendly. =D

To me personally, sustainability is not something that will change its shape easily nor can it be destroyed easily.
However, after the trip to IKEA, I learnt that sustainability can actually be ‘place’ into products. Without it, a lot of things will be destroyed very easily after receiving the ‘wonderful care’ given by humans (not all them though). Sustainability is in fact helping items to prolong their period of being use by people.

I think without it, the earth’s ‘health’ would be worse off than now. Therefore, everyone should do their part by just starting off with something simple, even if using recycled bag than plastic bag. Sustainability. Before my very fruitful trip to IKEA, I never really knew what the word meant. The dictionary didn't help, of course. What with the "to support, hold, or bear up from below; bear the weight of, as a structure." Well, now I know fully well that sustainability is not much more than doing our part to help the Earth stay healthy. Or to put it crudely, survive for longer than expected. Therefore, everyone should do their part to ensure that sustainability stays "alive".

i totally agree that you say my comments are cool:p the recycle part where u mention is true but however like wood you have to take down wood and as what everyone know, wood comes from trees and trees take a long period of time to grow back into a big adult tree so i would prefer the use of metal. though mental is non-biodegradeble but it is recycleable and when throw away could be used to make into new items.

I agree with your post on improving Esmonde's viewpoint. Although trees take a long time to grow, but for every tree that's cut down, grow back other one :D! And as for your metal theory, that works too. But won't the same apply for materials like plastic? So when people say 'Plastic is bad' and 'contributes to a non-sustainable environment', what exactly is the 'sustainable' material?

    ReplyDelete
  163. Randy Hong 2e4

Sustainability, to me. It is something that can be applied to almost everything around us. It is the way to make sure something is of good quality and meets our requirements while, at the same time, not compromising most of our resources and can be maintained for a long period of time. One example on giving the sustainability touch is on forests. To make the items that we need, such as paper, furniture, etc, we need to make sure our methods are sustainable. By doing this, we can make our products of good quality without compromising the population of the forests. One example of these methods is the replacement of trees that were cut down. By replacing them, the population is balanced and thus, not compromising the forest.

I agree with Candy's and jessica's point of view of the 3R's, reduce, reuse and recycle. True enough that has got to do with sustainability. We have to think of a long term solution and the 3r's seem to have a great effect. However I belive durability is also a factor. Eventhough a prduct would be classified as eco-friendly, if it is not durable, who would even want it? Thus, durability is also a factor, with it combined with the 3R's it would be great =D

    -can withstand great mass
    -Durable
    -Can be recycled and reused
-And the product is not a useless product that occupys space for nothing

The above facts are important as people can save money by not buying the product frequently as it is durable and when the product is durable, less people will buy it,
less material will be needed to make it and less space will be used up for it.

    ReplyDelete
  173. I agree with Carina's point. If a product is not durable, people will not buy them as it is a waste of their hard earn money. If a product can not be recycled, it will take up space and we will have to cut down trees to have space to live in, which is very environmentally unfriendly.

Sustainabilty is closely linked to the product which we are making for IKEA. As one of its main factor is that it can save the earth. By applying recycle and reuse, our product can help save the Earth by wsaving its precious resources.

  175. I agree with carina and shi hui's comment. Without the factors of sustainability, a product would have no meaning in helping mankind ad it will simply harm Earth's precious resources and in turn, affecting mankind in a negative way. What does sustainability mean to me:
    -Durable yet environmentally-friendly
    -Use of recycled materials
    -Anti-plastic
    -Saving resources
    -Able to withstand weight

Sustainability is an important factor that we must not overlook because consumers consider this factor before they purchase our products. Moreover,we can do our parts on saving the Earth. Hence I feel that sustainability is very imporant.

I feel honoured to be able to work with IKEA for this project.I am grateful for the learning journey as it has educated me more about why IKEA has such a different business model compared to other furniture shops.I realised there was so much more in the showrooms when I went with the school compared with going there with my parents. The learning journey gave me more inspirations for my product and through it, I will be able to create a product that is both practical and sustainable, thus making it eco-friendly.

I agree with Yi Tien's post. What she has mentioned about sustainability is definitely something that we can do as students for saving the environment that we live in. I agree that a product which can last is a good product. :D

In my opinion, sustainability is the capacity to endure the potential for long-term maintenance or well-being. Sustainability also means that the materials used for making the product can last for a long time and the materials itself do not harm the environment. Thus, it means that the product is eco-friendly and can be maintained for a long time.

To me,sustainability means that the materials used is able to last for a very long time thus it won't cause any waste to the environment. And it also means that is actually friendly to the environment.

Agree to what yong xin had posted.
The main point of a product to have sustainability is to be more friendly to the environment and to prevent globol warming from turning bad to worse. So a good product do required sustainability thus hope that we will be able to produce a product that has that.:)

I believe that sustainability is what earth requires to endure. Therefore i greatly feel that having a sustainability sign is a useful note to consumers, to remind them of saving unnecessary electricity. Also, i have learnt many things from IKEA, specific details of each items shown there. The trip had allowed me to understand the obstacles faced to design a new product as well...

To me,sustainability is about the 3Rs which are reduce, reuse, recycle. This basically means to care for the materials on Earth as it is limited. Besides that, sustainability also means to me that it should not be of plastic material. This is because plastics are non-biodegradable and plastics are made from fossil fuels that are already running out.

After reading the comments made by fellow school mates, I strongly agree to the statement by waiyheng. She pointed out that customers look at the factor on sustainability. And in Ikea, we are selling things to people of all ages, this means that if we could make sure we have sustainability this factor met, we would have higher chance of having our item being popular. :D

I think sustainability to me means the product must be sustainable and long lasting. Sustainability to me also means that the making of the product must also not harm the environment.

I agree with Chong Yong Xin as the product must be lasting and should not harm or destroy the enviroment. This is to stop the environment from becoming worse, not only in global warming but also the increasing amount of rubbish and the decreasing amount of fossil fuels. Though it is going to be hard to produce a product that can do that but I will try my best to produce such product.

To me, sustainability means that the product must not harm the environment, for example, the materials used to make the product must be environmentally-friendly. The product must also be able to last long and it must carry a message to remind people to care for the environment.

I think that the learning journey trip to ikea was benificial. I had a whole new experience as compared to going with my family. I learnt many new things like sustainability and 'flat pack'. Overall, it was a enjoyable trip and a fun learning experience. I hope more of such learning journey will be organised. =)

  190. Flat packing limits our design too much.(serviet holder) Does it have to be packed such as there is very little or no spaces?

I think that sustainability is the ability to maintain for long periods of time(durable), without spoiling and must be ecologically viable in the long run. I think that sustainability is very important now, especially since we are all facing problems like Global Warming, less Earth natural resources...., so all the more we need to produce more items that are sustainable, in order to help us all save more resources of Earth by taking only what we need and thus do our part in saving Earth. So to me, I think that sustainability is a very important factor.

I agree with what Wai Yheng had posted that sustainability is very important in the product that we do. Since now that Earth is facing problems like depleting natural resources, all the more we should do our part in saving Earth by making products that are durable and last for long periods of time.So I hope that we can all achieve that while doing our D&T product :D

I feel that what Jessica tan from 2E4 had said about sustainability is quite meaningful and i fully agree with the concept she has for the meaning of sustainability. Her concept wraps around the idea of cutting down the unneccesary expenses to help earth from global-warming.
ideas like bio-degradable bags and using recycled bags instead of plastic bags were mentioned. ihope this kind of idea will be etched in the minds of puiblic which will help the environment greatly.

The following is my reflection on our DNT class that went on today which was mostly about SCAMPER.

In my point of view, if we have to modify our product according to S.C.A.M.P.E.R is quite interesting and it helps us to think deeper and develop our product to its highest potential. However, I would like to emphasise about what P and E stands for which is Put it to other uses & Eliminate. In my point of view, if we were to put it to other uses and eliminate it or other things that we find maybe will promote difficulty in doing the design itself, why put it to other uses in the first place when knowing that we must eliminate it there after. P and E to me are not quite important as our focus are more to Sustainability. Like Mr. Suffian's example, in one of his diagram he drew a slot to put it to other uses during the Put it to other uses but eventually, eliminate it on the next diagram (if I am not wrong), I get that he is trying to demonstrate the whole idea of SCAMPER but to me if you were eliminate something that was already drawn or may be put into other uses may be quite dangerous as students in the process of trying to keep it simple might eliminate other ideas that are productive.

Hence, in my opinion, SCAMPER, during the elimination process, students must be extra careful with what they think might be good or bad for the product itself.

After going to IKEA, it relly expands my horizons of what is it like to save the environment. As days and weeks goes by, the potential of designing is unleashing among our groupmates. I hope that our end product would be a success.

  197. We have been very fortunate to be chosen by IKEA to join their efforts in saving the Earth. Students should take this opportunity to showcase their talents in DnT. By creating a product that is portable; light and small, we can make life easier for people and help save the Earth at the same time. It is of upmost importance that we take this project into the back of our minds as a good product, could change people's mindset on the Earth and help out. And having been grouped together, we could take this chance to increase our bonds and learn new things together. Having groupmates, they could tell and help you to correct your mistakes and vice versa.
